Le Lavandou

Le Lavandou ( Provence Lou Lavandou ) is a commune with 5356 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) on the Mediterranean coast at the foot of the Massif des Maures in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur. Directly in front are the islands of Port-Cros and Île du Levant, Porquerolles with the count to the Iles d'Hyeres.

Origin of the name

The word Lavandou recalls due to the similarity of names, first of all at Lavender ( French lavande ). In fact, growing like in many places in Provence in the hills of the Massif des Maures, a Lavendelart ( lavandula stoechas ). However, the designation of lavender in the original language, Provençal is Queirélé. The most likely answer to the question of the origin of the name was the Provencal poet and Nobel laureate Frédéric Mistral, indicating the word lavoir (French for laundry ) as the origin of the name. The Town Hall of Le Lavandou has a painting depicting the hamlet Lavandou in 1736. In the foreground, a wash-house is to be seen in which the local women wash their laundry.

Local government

Until the beginning of the 20th century belonged to the town of Le Lavandou Bormes -les -Mimosas. In 1909, the city demanded the status of an autonomous community, which was finally granted in May 1913.

Interesting

On September 19, 2000 forbade the mayor Gil Bernardi of the population to die in Le Lavandou. This was due to the overcrowding of the local cemetery and the prohibition of the cemetery expansion towards the sea by the Administrative Court in Nice. With the German town of Kronberg im Taunus (Hesse) Le Lavandou is connected since 1972 by town twinning.
