Le Maire Strait

Geographical location

The Le Maire Strait (Spanish Estrecho de le Maire ) is a sea between the Isla de los Estados and the eastern foothills of the Argentine part of Tierra del Fuego, the Mitre Peninsula. It is 34 nautical miles long and at its narrowest point 30.6 kilometers wide.

Jacob Le Maire and Willem Schouten discovered the road on January 24, 1616 while they were searching a navigable link between the Atlantic and the Pacific. The search was necessary because they were forbidden passage of the Strait of Magellan. A few days later, on 29 January, they discovered Cape Horn. The road was later named in honor of Le Maire.
