Le Morne Brabant

Le Morne Brabant

F

The Le Morne Brabant is a 556 meter high mountain on the peninsula in the southwest of Mauritius. At the foot of Le Morne Brabant are sandy beaches of coral sand. The mountain acts by its height almost like a lighthouse and covers an area of over 12 hectares. Many hotels have settled on the beaches around the mountain.

History

In the 19th century slaves fled in large numbers on the Le Morne Brabant. On 1 February 1835 police expedition was sent on the occasion of the end of slavery in Mauritius on the mountain. Many slaves understood the gesture wrong and rushed from the mountain to their deaths. Since that tragic day February 1 is celebrated in the Creole society in Mauritius as a holiday for the end of slavery.

2008, the mountain was included by UNESCO as a cultural landscape in the list of world cultural heritage. Here, even the rich oral traditions on the role of the mountain were recognized for the suffering and for the liberation of the slaves.

Environment

Close to the Le Morne Brabant villages Le Morne, Chamarel, L' embrasure and La gaulette lie. Points of interest are the huge Shiva statue, Seven Coloured Earth Chamarel and the waterfalls at Chamarel. The Peninsula of Le Morne Brabant is determined by a micro-climate

Mountaineering

Due to the steepness of the mountain you can climb it with a rope team. It would also be helpful to have an experienced guide here.
