Le Plan-de-la-Tour

Le Plan -de- la-Tour (until 2008 Plan-de- la-Tour ) is a commune with 2910 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the Var department in the Provence- Alpes- Côte d' Azur.

Geography

Le Plan -de- la-Tour is surrounded by wooded hills in a fertile plain at the Préconil and its tributaries in the Massif des Maures. From here, the Colle Dure to 538 m and 412 m Santpeire to rise. In addition to the village of Le Plan-de- la-Tour consists of additional 24 villages and hamlets to the community. From the hilltop village Valaury looks out over the entire valley.

History

The beginnings of the history of Le Plan -de- la-Tour date back to prehistoric times. Dolmens, menhirs and arrowheads document the presence of people in the Neolithic and Bronze Age megalithic culture about 2500 years before our era. Archaeological finds prove the settlement in the Celtic- Ligurian and the Gallo- Roman era.

After the Saracen settlement in the early Middle Ages, the recent history between the 10th and 12th century starts with a little hilltop village, which appears as Castrum de Planaturris in the sources. In the 15th century, the population moved to escape from the back advancing Saracens back into the hinterland. Soon the area, which had furthermore suffered from outbreaks of plague, almost completely abandoned by humans. Until the 16th century settled back slowly people in the villages of the surrounding area. Then the present name Plan de la Tour in the documents first appears at the beginning of the 17th century.

During the French Revolution, Plan-de- la-Tour broke away from La Garde -Freinet and in 1792 into an independent municipality. By decree of 3 October 2008, the municipality in Le Plan-de- la-Tour has been renamed.

Population

Since the early 1960s may Le Plan -de- la-Tour experiencing strong population growth. Within about 40 years, the population of about 820 tripled to more than 2,500 inhabitants.

Personalities

  • The writer Jean Aicard (1848-1921) inspired Le Plan -de- la-Tour to his novel " Maurin des Maures ".
  • Vanessa Paradis and Johnny Depp have a house in Le Plan -de- la-Tour.
