Le Puy Cathedral

History

The oldest parts of the choir date from the second half of the 11th century. The building is striking not only for its sublime location, but also by its impressive facade. On the nave was worked since the 12th century.

We then created a new building in an outdated for the schedule with vierjochigem tonnengewölbtem nave, transept enormous, which also received vaults and to galleries on the front side, and an elongated inner semi-circular, rectangular exterior sheathed choir. Well out of respect for the sanctity of the place you saved the choir form the old building. In the course of the 12th century was replaced by the tons domes.

The increase of the pilgrims in the second half of the 12th century made a magnification required. The sacred character of the apse forbade an extension to the east, where there was no lack of space. Therefore we extended the construction of two additional bays to the west.

The important early Christian cathedral, some well -fed from Islamic sources decor was the victim of a radical and catastrophic reconstruction in the 19th century.

In a process in which the next inevitably drew each step to the architect Mallay reconstructed from 1884 cupola and lantern tower, the last two domes of the nave, which were not completed until late, the southern transept and the upper part of the north, eventually the two western yokes and the facade. From 1865 to 1866 they demolished the choir and reconstructed it arbitrarily.

Between 1844 and 1888 was the east of the choir, built in the 12th century tower on the series. His restoration meant a rebuilding of the second floor. Eventually escaped, only the third and the fourth Langhausjoch the serious interference. They were restored, not reconstructed.

Also noteworthy is the Cloister with many original capitals.
