Le Sap

Le Sap is a commune with 933 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Orne in Basse-Normandie region. It belongs to the community association Communauté de communes du pays de camembert. The inhabitants are called Sapiens.

Geography

Le Sap lies on the northern border of the département of Pays d' Ouche and the Pays d'Auge, 68 kilometers southeast of Le Havre, 29 kilometers southeast of Lisieux, 10.4 kilometers south-east of Vimoutiers and 12.5 kilometers east of Camembert. Neighboring communities of Le Sap Le Bosc- Renoult in the Northwest, Saint- Germain- d'Aunay in the northeast, Monnai in the east, the west and Orville Rouvray in the West. The municipal area covers 2273 hectares, the average altitude is 226 meters above sea level, the Mairie stands at a height of 230 meters.

History

1100, the village was first mentioned in documents as Sappum. The name is of Celtic origin Sap, SAPPO (French sapin ) means fir.

Coat of arms

The coat of arms of the municipality consists of silver and red diamonds ( LOSANGE d' argent et de gueules ). The metallic silver color is white in heraldry.

Culture and sights

Structures

The Fort Montpellier is a medieval castle in Le Sap. It bears its name since 1153, when the Comte de Montpellier appointed Henry II of England governor, because he was heir to the throne of England. In 1378 the castle was destroyed and replaced by a residential building in the 15th century. During the Ancien Régime ( absolutist rule in France ) elimination of Montpellier was the seat of the Viscount of Sap. During World War II it was the seat of the German commandant.

The Saints- Pierre -et -Paul was built in the 14th century. In 1562 it was burned down during the Wars of Religion, only the choir remained. A new nave was built in the 16th century yet. The choir was enlarged in the 17th century. In the same period, the vestry was built. The entrance is in the style of Henry IV of France designed ( 1553-1610 ).

Annual events include a flea market on the first Sunday in May, a horse race on the 2nd Sunday in August, a village on August 15th and the feast of cider à l' ancienne (Traditional) on the 2nd weekend in November.

Economy

The image of the church is dominated by forests and pastures. There is an on site agricultural and dairy cooperative and a company that makes fishing equipment.
