Le Sieur Danoville

Le Sieur Danoville ( worked late 17th century ) was a French viol player and instrumental teacher.

Le Sieur Danoville described himself as a pupil of Monsieur de Sainte -Colombe. In 1687 he published the textbook L'Art de toucher le dessus et le basse de Violle for the game on the viola da gamba. This brief work of only 47 pages was intended for self-study. It includes four parts in which the attitude of the viol, the notation and the fingerboard in notation and tablature, the ornaments, and finally the sheet guide are explained. Unlike Jean Rousseau's Traité de la viole, which appeared in the same year and won extraordinary popularity, comprised Danovilles textbook not historical, aesthetic play and instrument known union chapter, but was limited to the technical instructions. Danoville is the first author, who pointed to the diatonic fingerings of the treble instruments that were not suitable because of their small design for chromatic playing.
