Le Sud-Ouest

Le Sud -Ouest is one of 19 arrondissements of the city of Montreal in the Canadian province of Québec. In 2011, the 15.7 km ² large city district counted 71 546 inhabitants.

Geography

Le Sud- Ouest is located in the southeast of Ile de Montréal, the Lachine Canal and the shores of the St. Lawrence River. The name ( translated as " the Southwest" ) refers to the situation of the district southwest of downtown. Adjacent arrondissements the city of Montreal is Ville-Marie in the north, Côte -des- Neiges -Notre- Dame-de- Grâce in the southwest, La Salle in the south and in the east of Verdun. In the West, Le Sud -Ouest is bordered by the autonomous community of Westmount.

History

The area of present-day municipality was inhabited since the second half of the 17th century. There were some small villages whose inhabitants agricultural. 1825 the Lachine Canal was opened and about two decades later, more and more industrial enterprises began to settle. The area developed into a major industrial center; next, workmen suburbs, whose residents (mainly Irish immigrants ) lived in squalor in part.

The rapidly growing and financially constrained suburbs southwest of Montreal were incorporated early. The first was in 1887 Saint- Gabriel, 1905 followed Côte -Saint -Henri and Sainte- Cunégonde, 1910 finally Emard and Saint -Paul. The industry continued to play a major role, until it came to a structural crisis in the 1950s. Industrial enterprises were shut down or moved to other locations, the Lachine Canal in 1970 closed.
