Lea County is a county located in the state of New Mexico in the United States. It has 64 727 inhabitants. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Lovington.
The county has an area of 11,380 square kilometers; 3 of them are square kilometers (0.02 percent) of water. The county is bordered clockwise to the County: Roosevelt County, Cochran County ( Texas), Andrews County ( Texas), Gaines County ( Texas), Yoakum County ( Texas), Winkler County ( Texas), Loving County ( Texas), Eddy County and Chaves County.
According to the census of 2000, there were 55 511 people in the county. There were 19,699 households, and 14,715 families. The population density was 5 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 67.13 % White, 4.37 % African American, 0.99 % Native American, 0.39 % Asian, 0.04 % Pacific Islander residents from the and 23.81 % from other races groups; 3.27% were descended from two or more races. 39.65% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 19,699 households out of which 39.30 % have children under the age of 18 living with them. 57.80 % were married couples living together, 12.20% had a female householder with no husband. 25.30 % were non-families. 22.50% of all households and 9.90% had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older.
