Lead (II ) sulfate ( PbSO4 ), a white crystalline solid, the lead (II) salt of the sulfuric acid.

Occurrence

In nature, one finds lead (II ) sulfate in the form of rhombic, diamond shiny Anglesit ( Vitriolbleierz ). In the pure state, one also speaks of " stained glass ".

In the discharge of lead-acid batteries is lead (II ) sulfate forms:

Representation

The largely insoluble in water lead (II ) sulfate is produced as a white precipitate in the reaction of soluble lead (II ) salts such as lead (II ) nitrate or lead ( II ) acetate with soluble sulfates such as sodium sulfate or sulfuric acid:

Properties

The lead compound is a solid having a relatively high density of 6.35 g/cm3. In water it is almost insoluble in concentrated sulfuric acid and strong acids it dissolves well.

Therefore contains sulfuric acid that is obtained according to the lead chamber process, lead ( II) sulphate, which mainly re- precipitated on dilution of the acid.

Concentrated alkaline solutions capable of lead (II ) sulfate to form Plumbat (II ) ions to solve.

Use

Lead (II ) sulfate was used as the white color painter. Their advantage is that it is resistant to light and air. The disadvantage, however, is that the color covers and dries worse than, for example white lead. Hydrogen sulfide and lead sulfide formation lead to a darkening. In addition, lead (II ) sulfate was used for the production of boiled linseed oil and as a weighting agent. Lead (II ) sulfate may no longer be freely sold in Germany because of its toxicity.

The precipitation of lead (II ) sulfate by addition of lead salt solutions with dilute sulfuric acid is used in the analysis for the quantitative determination of lead.
