Due to the Crow Wing River of Leaf River is part of the watershed of the Mississippi River.

The Leaf River originates at Gourd Lake in the eastern Otter Tail County ( "otter tail" County) and then flows eastwards through southern Wadena County, and passes between three lakes, namely the Grass Lake, the East Leaf Lake and the West Leaf Lake before reaching the town Bluffton. Then it flows about 16 km northwest of the town of Staples in the Thomas Township from the east in the Crow Wing River.

Tributaries of the Leaf River are again the Wing River and the Redeye River, both of which accrue in Wadena County.

History

The Leaf River served as the limit for the 1847 between the Pillager Chippewas and the United States concluded the Treaty of Washington and in 1855 entered into between the Mississippi Chippewas, the Pillager Chippewas and the U.S. government the Treaty of Washington. The case assigned country ( east of the river ) was the Menominee, a person living in Wisconsin Native American entity, including, but these refused to extract from Wisconsin and sold the land in 1854 again the United States.
