Leagues of Inner Mongolia
Aimag ( officially: Federal Government, also: League ) is an administrative unit in Inner Mongolia, People's Republic of China.
Since the Qing Dynasty aimags exist as a government level. The head of an aimag was chosen from the Jasagh Sula or a banner to which it belongs. The original six aimags were Jirem (also: Jirim ), Ju Ud (also: Juu Uda ), Josutu, Xilin Gol, Ulanqab and Ih Ju ( Yeke Juu ). There were also other over the centuries.
Today aimags to include district level of the Chinese administrative hierarchy and meet the administrative districts. Of the nine aimags that existed in the late 1970s, six were converted into prefecture-level cities.
