Leandro Bassano

Leandro Bassano ( Leandro dal Ponte actually ) (* June 26, 1557 in Bassano del Grappa, † 1622 in Venice) was an Italian painter and one of the four sons of Jacopo Bassano.

He worked in the Venetian workshop of his family under his elder brother Francesco Bassano the Younger, who headed the Venetian branch of the family. Francesco committed suicide a few months after his father's death suicide. Then Leandro took over the management of the workshop. He was the first portrait painter of the family and his portraits are now compared with those of Jacopo Tintoretto. To In 1595 he was knighted by the Doge ( after which he sometimes added ' Eques ' to his signature added ).
