Lebap Province

Lebap Welaýaty (formerly Чарджоуская область, Tschardschouskaja oblast ) is one of the five provinces of Turkmenistan.

The province is located in the east of the country, bordered to the east by Uzbekistan and in the southeast Afghanistan. It is drained by the river Amu Darya, of which the south the Karakum Canal branches off parts of the province are occupied by the Karakum Desert.

The area is 93,800 km ², its population (2006) approximately 1,431,000, thus resulting in a population density of 15 inhabitants / km ².

The provincial capital is Türkmenabat (formerly Tschardschou or Çärjew ), other major cities are Magdanly (formerly Gowurdak ) and Atamyrat.
