Lebrade Pond Bird Sanctuary

The nature reserve Vogelfreistätte Lebrader pond located in Schleswig -Holstein, in the district of Plön, about 7 kilometers north of Plön. The area is located in the Holstein Switzerland nature park, covers an area of about 144 hectares and is designated as a conservation area as well as a Natura 2000 site. It has a length of 1.7 km and a width of about one kilometer.

History

The lakes were artificially created in the 17th century as fish ponds from Good Rixdorf for carp keeping and breeding. Today, the large, very flat, which can be drained ponds continue to be used extensively, a stocking with fish no longer takes place. The non-profit Marius Boeger Foundation for Nature Conservation and Regional Studies has leased the area. In winter, the ponds are drained.

Flora

In the area there are natural eutrophic lakes that have international significance for the protection of migratory waterfowl. In addition to the lakes silted areas are available. There come to characteristic forms of vegetation such as reeds, willows, wet grassland, swamp forests and fens and intermediate marsh vegetation.

Fauna

Use

The county road L 53 leads from Lebrade to Sellin through the area. On the way stopping is not possible, but from here you have a good overview of the nature reserve. An observation post is located in the northern part of the village Lebrade. From here a good opportunity to observe the birds is given in the area. In addition, here are signs with information about the nature reserve and the encountered here birds. The area is otherwise not accessible by roads.
