Rhyncotheca spinosa

The plant family of Ledocarpaceae belongs to the order of the pantograph -like ( Geraniales ). The distribution of the species is exclusively neotropisch: the areas are in western South America, mainly in the Andes.

Description

There are mostly small shrubs or rarely subshrubs. The most against permanent leaves are simple or compound; the leaves of some species are deeply lobed. Stipules absent.

The flowers are borne singly or in few-flowered inflorescences. The hermaphroditic, flowers are radial symmetry fünfzählig. There is an outdoor chalice. There are five sepals and petals present, also one or two circles with five stamens. The three or five fused carpels form a superior ovaries. The style is short or is not visible and there are the same number of scars like carpels. Are formed capsule fruits.

In the family Ledocarpaceae there are only two or three genera with about eleven to twelve species:

  • Balbisia Cav. (including Ledocarpon )
  • Rhyncotheca (some authors own family Rhyncothecaceae Endl. ): In this genus no sepals are present.
