Lee County (South Carolina)
Lee County is a county located in the state of South Carolina in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Bishopville.
Geography
The County is located north-east of the geographic center of South Carolina and has an area of 1065 square kilometers, of which 3 square miles is water area. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Darlington County, Florence County, Sumter County and Kershaw County.
History
Lee County was formed in 1902. It was named the commanding general of the Confederate in the American Civil War by Robert Edward Lee.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Lee County 20,119 people in 6,886 households and 4,916 families. The population density was 19 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 35.03 percent White, 63.56 percent Black or African American, 0.13 percent Native American, 0.19 percent Asian, and 0.59 percent from other races; 0.49 percent were descended from two or more races. 1.31 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 6,886 households, 32.7 percent had children under the age of 18 living with them. 43.0 percent were married couples living together, 23.8 percent were single mothers, 28.6 percent were non-families, 25.9 percent of all households and 10.6 percent living alone who is 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.23 persons.
25.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old. 10.0 percent between 18 to 24, 29.2 percent between 25 and 44, 22.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 12.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 36 years. For every 100 females there were 101.4 males to 100 females age 18 and over, there were 101.1 males.
The median income for a household was $ 26,907, and the median income for a family was $ 34,209. Males had a median income of $ 26,512, women $ 18,993. The per capita income was $ 13,896. 17.7 percent of families and 21.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
