He had his first world record in 1966 in Los Angeles., As a member of the U.S. national team in the 4 x 400 - meter relay with 2:59,6 minutes of first-team time in under 3 minutes The following year he broke the world record in Fresno on 4-by- 220 yards with a time of 1:22,1 minutes.

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City he set in the qualifying rounds of the 400-meter run with 44.0 seconds a new world record and the final race, he broke his own world record of 43.86 seconds, with which he won the gold medal, before the other two Americans Larry James (Silver) and Ron Freeman (bronze). Days later he won the team gold medal in the 4 x 400 - meter relay, also with a new world record with a time of 2:56,1 minutes, along with his teammates Vince Matthews, Freeman and James, before the teams from Kenya (Silver) and from Germany (bronze). Both world records had a validity of 20 years and were considered along with the long jump world record (8.90 m) by Bob Beamon -a-century world records of those Olympics.

1969 and 1972, he won the AAU Championship over 400 meters. At the 1972 Summer Olympics in Munich Evans took part because he was qualified in U.S. Trials as fourth runner for the 4 x 400 - meter relay. Da Vince Matthews and Wayne Collett were excluded based on their behavior during the medal ceremony for the 400 meter race from the games and John Smith failed due to a thigh strain in the 400 m finals, the U.S. had not enough runners for the season. Therefore, no U.S. relay could start, and Lee Evans had no use.
