Lee Hoi-chang

Lee Hoi -chang ( born June 2, 1935 in the previous sub-province Kokaido, Chosen Province, Empire of Japan, today's North Korea ) is a former South Korean Prime Minister. He was also Constitutional Court judges and two-time presidential candidate of the conservative Grand National Party.

The son of a prosecutor is a Karrierebürokrat. In 1981, he became the youngest judge in the constitutional history of South Korea. From December 1993 to April 1994 he was prime minister for the New Korea Party ( NKP ) under Kim Young- sam, but resigned due to low powers.

After 1997, the NKP with another party for the Grand National Party (GNP ) merged, Lee was from prominent business man and mayor of Seoul, Cho Soon, supported.

He had initially had the reputation of personal blamelessness and was initially as an election favorite against the world-famous Kim Dae -jung, but fell because of the serious in South Korea allegation that his sons would have shirked military service, on the defensive and lost with 38.7 % against 40.3 %.

In April 2000 the GNP surprisingly won the general election in May 2000, he was confirmed with 66.3 % votes as party chairman and entered 2002 once again on the presidential election.

The candidate of suffering from corruption scandals ruling party Millennium Party Roh Moo -hyun could beat him with the support of Chung Mong- joon and perceived as a modern election campaign again, with 48.9 % against 46.4 % 70.8 % turnout, much less as in the election before that. Then Lee moved in 2002 temporarily retired from politics.

He expressed himself even further in the media on political issues, but was not considered very promising for further elections. 2006 called for his followers but publicly making a comeback. He then stepped up to the presidential elections as an independent candidate in the party the following year. But he was defeated with a vote share of 15.1%, the official candidate of the GNP Lee Myung -bak and finished in third place behind Chung Dong -young of the Uri Party. After this defeat, he founded the party of freedom Forward ( Jayu Seonjin, 자유 선진 당 ). In the parliamentary elections of 2008, this reached 6.8 % of the vote.
