Lee Jong-wook

Lee Jong -wook ( born April 12, 1945 in Seoul, † 22 May 2006 Geneva ) was Director General of the World Health Organization. He was elected as the successor of Gro Harlem Brundtland on May 21, 2003 for a five -year term.

Lee was a doctor of medicine and had a Master of Public Health. Since 1983 he has worked in various capacities at national and regional level for the WHO. In 1994 he moved to the head to Geneva, where he was until his election one of the leading physicians in the fight against tuberculosis and for vaccination against communicable diseases.

He died after an emergency operation on 22 May 2006 of a cerebral hemorrhage he had suffered two days earlier. He was succeeded by Anders Nordström.
