Leeds is a city in Jefferson County in the U.S. state of Alabama, parts of the district busy, but also in the St. Clair County and the Shelby County. In 2004 Leeds had about 11,000 inhabitants according to the calculations of the Census Office.

Geography

The city has an area of 58.3 km ², of which 57.9 km ² of land and 0.4 km ² ( = 0.67 %) to water.

History

The city, whose namesake Leeds in West Yorkshire, England is, was incorporated on 27 April 1887. The growth of the young settlement was determined by three factors: the Incorporation of nahegelegenenen city of Birmingham and the beginning of its processing of iron ore, the construction of the Georgia Pacific Railway from Birmingham to Atlanta, Georgia and the construction of a factory for Portland cement in 1906.
