Leela Chitnis

Leela Chitnis ( born September 9, 1909 in Dharwar, Karnataka, † July 14, 2003 in Danbury, Connecticut) was an Indian actress.

Life

It began in the early 1930s as a stage actress in the Maratha theater group " Natyamanwantar " by Keshav Narayan Kale. To the film she came 1935th She played at the companies Sagar, Prabhat and Ranjit Movietone before they took over in 1940 in the films Kangan, Azad, Bandhan and Jhoola Starring alongside Ashok Kumar in Bombay Talkies. In 1941 she was the first Indian movie star advertising model for Lux soap. In 1948, she starred in Shaheed for the first time the mother of the film heroes. The role of a widowed or abandoned mother in a white sari, she embodied henceforth frequently, so for Raj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar and Dev Anand, and shaped so that its image in the viewer.

Under the direction of Master Vinayak and Raja Paranjpe she appeared occasionally in Marathi movies. In Aaj Ki Baat (1955 ) led them to direct myself. Her autobiography Chanderi Duniyet appeared in 1981. The last film appearance was in 1985. During the late 1980s she moved with her children to the United States.
