Leelanau County, Michigan
Leelanau County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Leland.
Geography
The County is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is bordered on the northeast by Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of 6559 square kilometers, of which 5656 square miles are water. It includes not only the area on the mainland, the Fox and the Manitou Islands in Lake Michigan. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Antrim County, Grand Traverse County, Benzie County and on Lake Michigan at the Delta County, Schoolcraft County and Charlevoix County.
History
Leelanau County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft for a word from the Indian language.

According to the census in 2000 lived in Leelanau County 21,119 people in 8,436 households and 6,217 families. The population density was 23 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was made up of 93.52 percent White, 0.25 percent African American, 3.66 percent Native American, 0.24 percent Asian, 0.02 percent of residents from the Pacific Islander and 1.34 percent from other races groups; 0.97 percent were descended from two or more races. 3.29 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 8,436 households out of which 29.9 percent of children under the age of 18 living with them. 63.6 percent were married couples living together, 7.1 percent were single mothers and 26.3 percent were non-families. 22.3 percent of all households and 8.8 percent had someone living alone at the age of 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.89.
24.4 percent of the population were under 18 years old. 5.7 percent 18 to 24 years 24.2 percent between 25 and 44, 28.3 percent between 45 and 64 years, and 17.4 percent were 65 years or older. The average age was 43 years. For every 100 females there were 99.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 97.1 men statistically.
The median income for a household in the 47 062 U.S. dollars, and the median income for a family $ 53,228. Males have a median income of $ 35,719, women $ 25,778. The per capita income was $ 24,686. 3.3 percent of families and 5.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
