Leelanau County, Michigan

Leelanau County is a county located in the state of Michigan in the United States. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Leland.

Geography

The County is located in the northwest of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, is bordered on the northeast by Lake Michigan, one of the five Great Lakes, and has an area of ​​6559 square kilometers, of which 5656 square miles are water. It includes not only the area on the mainland, the Fox and the Manitou Islands in Lake Michigan. It is bordered clockwise to the following counties: Antrim County, Grand Traverse County, Benzie County and on Lake Michigan at the Delta County, Schoolcraft County and Charlevoix County.

History

Leelanau County was formed in 1840 from parts of Mackinac County. It was named by Henry Schoolcraft for a word from the Indian language.
