The Legend of the Eight Samurai (Japanese里 见 八 犬 伝, Satomi Hakkenden ) is a Japanese movie from the year 1983.

The film is based on the novel Shin Satomi Hakkenden (新·里 见 八 犬 伝) by Toshio Kamata, which in turn is a free adaptation of the epic Nanso Satomi Hakkenden by Bakin Kyokutei. Kamata worked together with director Kinji Fukasaku also the script for the adventure film. Toei and Kadokawa Haruki Jimusho produced the action film, in which Hiroko Yakushimaru took over the lead role.

Action

Eight Samurai awarded the contract to protect Princess Shizu, whose parents were killed in revenge of undead warriors. For this task, each of the eight samurai has a prayer bead. You can find out only during the execution of the contract, that they are not alone, but to fulfill the obligation as a group.

Reception

The legend of the eight samurai came on 10 December 1983 in Japanese theaters and was promoted there with a box office of about 2.32 billion yen a commercial success. The Legend of the Eight Samurai 1984 was the most successful domestic film at the Japanese box office.

The East German DEFA film studio dubbed the film and brought him on January 2, 1987 in the GDR cinemas. Editions of the film are available on DVD in the UK, Japan and the United States.

Awards

On the Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival 1985, the film was nominated for the main prize, but was beaten James Cameron's Terminator.

At the ceremony of the Japanese Academy Awards in 1985, the film was in the categories of Best Director, Best Actor ( Hiroyuki Sanada ) and Best Supporting Actress ( Mari Natsuki ) nominated.
