Legist

In the Austrian usage Legist is (Latin lex = law ) the professional qualification for lawyers who are exclusively or mainly entrusted with the elaboration of statutory or regulatory texts. A key criterion to distinguish different legal professions is that jurists create general laws and not individual (such as decisions or judgments).

In Austria, the majority of jurists is either as contract staff or officials serving the public sector.

History

As jurists we called in the Middle Ages also those scientists who are concerned with the Roman law (see legistics ), to distinguish it from the canonists.
