Leibnitz is a town in the Austrian state of Styria with 7848 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) and the district capital of the eponymous district. As part of the municipality of structural reform in Styria it is merged in 2015 with the communities Kaindorf Sulm and Seggauberg, the new community will continue to bear the name of Leibnitz. This is based on the Styrian community structure reform law - StGsrG.

Geography

Leibnitz in Southern Styria is located, about 33 km south of Graz between the rivers Mura and Sulm in Leibnitzerfeld.

The municipality consists of the cadastral Leibnitz (area 2001): Altenmarkt 131.92 ha, 463.59 ha Leibnitz Villages (population 2001): Old Market ( 1113 ) and Leibnitz ( 5779 ). Another area is Linden.

Policy

Mayor of Leibnitz is Helmut Leitenberg ( SPÖ). First Deputy Mayor is Isabella Pill ( SPÖ), second Vice Mayor Guido Jaklitsch (ÖVP ). The Parish Council is the city councils financial officer Alfred Pauli ( SPÖ) and Margit Baumhakel (ÖVP ) supplements.

The city council comprises 25 members, of which 15 of the SPÖ, the ÖVP 7, 1 belong to the Civic Forum Leibnitz ( list Vollmann ) and 2 have a clear mandate.

Economy and infrastructure

Leibnitz is particularly true than wine, culture, school and shopping center. In the main square are nearby catering and accommodation establishments. The Leibnitzerfeld is used intensively for agriculture. Traditionally predominate here the cultivation of Kukuruz (also called Woaz ) and edible gourds, from which the Styrian pumpkin seed oil is produced. With the closure of the Hermann Barracks in 2007 as part of the army reform was Leibnitz the 46 -year-old military tradition as a garrison town to an end.

The hills in the surrounding area will be used as a wine -growing regions. On them to tavern establishments, most of them are in the nearby communities Kitzeck and Gamlitz. The " South Styrian Wine Winter" will be held in February after Perchtenlauf.

Schools and Education

Since the 1960s, the city of Leibnitz has developed into an educational center. Two nurseries look after the little ones. Two elementary schools, two new middle schools, one junior high school, a polytechnic school and the Bundesrealgymnasium and the Vocational School Leibnitz form the basis for the secondary schools, such as trade school and commercial college Leibnitz. For the musical education of the Franz- Koringer Music School is responsible.
