The Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Transition Economies ( IAMO), former Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe, is a research institute based in Halle (Saale ). The Institute is devoted to the analysis of economic, social and political processes of change in the agricultural and food sector and in rural areas. His study area extends from the EU widening of the transition economies of Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe to Central and East Asia.

The Institute, founded in 1994, is an independent public foundation of Saxony- Anhalt and is a member of the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz ( WGL). In addition, the Institute is a full member in the Science Campus Hall - Plant-based bio-economy.

Research priorities

As an international agricultural economic research institute IAMO conducting basic and applied research. It analyzes agricultural policy framework and design options, the markets in the agricultural and food sector as well as the development of enterprises and structures in rural areas. Operational and agricultural policy decisions and market processes thereby also affect the human-environment relations in rural areas. The scientific work of the Institute is hereby organized into four research areas:

  • Policy reforms and institutional change
  • Structural change and business growth
  • Employment and living conditions
  • Competitive strategies and market requirements

The research area of the Institute is divided into three sections:

  • Environment for Agriculture and Policy Analysis,
  • Agricultural Markets, Marketing and World Agricultural Trade,
  • Operational and structural development in rural areas.

Financing

As part of the institutional support of the federal government bear in the form of the Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMELV ) and countries (in this case from the host State Saxony -Anhalt represented ) in equal shares to finance the IAMO. For the administrative and scientific work of the Institute in 2012 4.33 million euros were used in the year.
