Founded in 1927 by the shipping company Leif Høegh. The company initially began as a tanker company, a division, which accounted for a major portion of the shipping company for decades. Twelve years later, Leif Höegh & Co. already operating a fleet of 13 ships. With the Java Pacific Line, the shipping company later joined in the area of ​​liner shipping. From 1948 ( to 1990), a West Africa service was added. In the 1960s, the shipping company expanded its tanker shipping through the construction of tank - bulk carriers. In addition, Höegh 1970 formed the joint venture Höegh - Ugland Auto Liners ( Hual ) with the shipping company Ugland. The shipping company is one of the pioneers of the Ro-Ro shipping and car transport by sea. In March 2000, Höegh acquired the shares in the joint venture Uglands Hual, one of the largest suppliers in its segment, and led the shipping company from 2005 Höegh Auto Liners on. 1973 Höegh received the world's first LNG tanker with Moss tanks.

Today, the shipping group with Leif Höegh & Co Limited is structured as an umbrella company and various subsidiaries. Höegh Auto Liners operates a fleet of ships for worldwide transport of cars and trucks and Höegh LNG more gas tankers. Other areas include, for example, crew management, financial services or real estate. On land, employees are 100 employed in the fleet of around 900 sailors.
