Leigh Canham

Leigh Canham Trevor (born 1958 ) is a British scientist and professor. He devoted his scientific work of research of porous silicon ( pSi ), whose electrical and optical properties he revealed. He is also the founder of two medical technology companies that promote the well of him discovered medicinal benefits of pSi and sell the products. Since 1999, Canham is an honorary professor at the University of Birmingham.

Because of its frequent citation Canham applies since 2012 as a possible winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics.

Biography

Canham was educated at University College London where he acquired his Bachelor of Science in 1979. After another four years of study at King's College promotion followed to the Ph.D..

1986 Canham started his scientific activity as a Higher Scientific Officer in the Research Department (now QinetiQ ) of the UK Ministry of Defence. After he was in 1988 went up to Senior Scientific Officer, he succeeded in 1990 to demonstrate that porous silicon electroluminescence is capable of. The pSi was excited to emit visible light by applying an electrical voltage.

In 1995, he discovered that pSi is biodegradable and non-toxic to the human body what the material opened a number of medical applications. Canham then developed a nano-structured version of the pSi, BioSiliconTM. The structure of the BioSiliconTM makes it possible to load the material with drugs, genes or vaccines and controlled over a longer period released in the body.

As a result, Canham founded in December 2000 pSiMedica to open up further areas of research, and took over the scientific management of the Group. A little later he sold the company to pSivida, where it was incorporated into their corporate structure and Canham continued his work. Finally, he left and founded pSivida IntrinsiQ material where he specialized as a scientific leader in the development of nutritional therapy in the context of pSi.

In 2011 he was awarded the second place in the section of small and medium-sized enterprises at the European Inventor Award.
