Leiji Matsumoto

Leiji Matsumoto (Japanese松本 零 士, Matsumoto Reiji; born January 25, 1938 in Kurume ) is a pseudonym of a Japanese manga artist and director Akira Matsumoto (松本 あきらMatsumoto Akira ), which is known for its wide variety of Space Operas. Important works of his work are Captain Harlock or Space Battleship Yamato.

His debut as a professional manga artist he made in 1953, with 15 years, with no Boken Mitsubashi in the manga magazine Shōnen manga, for among other things, Osamu Tezuka worked. While he initially only recorded shōjo manga for girls, he moved in the 1960s in the genre of shōnen manga. These mostly dealt of science fiction and became great successes, which were often filmed in anime. Some of the films he directed himself led or took other production tasks.

Having an idea of Matsumoto's Interstella 2003 5555, an anime implementing the music of the French act Daft Punk was born.

Matsumoto has won several awards. He received the 1972 Kodansha Culture Prize: Jido - Manga Bumon for Otoko oidon, 1976 Shogakukan Manga Award in the category for Ginga Shōnen tetsudō 999 and a series of war manga and the 2003 Animation Kobe special price. He received in 2001 the Japanese Medal of Honor at the violet, and in 2010 the Small Order of the Rising Sun with rosette and 2012 the French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres in one stage Chevalier ( Knight ).

He is with Maki Miyako, which is also manga artist, married.
