Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei

The Leipzig Cotton Spinning Mill is a 10 -acre site on the edge of the Leipzig district of Lindenau. Parts thereof are used today gastronomically galleries and studios as well.

The company founded in 1884 has developed within a quarter of a century into the largest cotton mill in continental Europe. After its founding in 1884, grew up in the west of Leipzig a veritable factory town approach, with over 20 production facilities, workers' housing, kindergartens and a recovery settlement. 1907, the factory had reached its greatest extent. At around 100,000 m² cotton was processed with 240,000 spindles. Up to 4,000 people have worked here until 1989 in three-shift operation until production was discontinued after German reunification.

Artisans, professionals, people with the desire for independent living, and especially artists looking for affordable and atmospheric workrooms then settled on the site. Many artists that are attributed to the so-called " New Leipzig School " were the pioneers of this revitalization. Meanwhile, more than half of the space is leased again.

On the site there are eleven galleries (among ASPN, b2, Dogenhaus, Eigen Art Gallery Filipp -Rosbach, gallery Kleindienst, shop for nothing, maerzgalerie ), the nonprofit arts center hall 14 and around 100 artists (eg. Rauch, Rosa Loy, Matthias Wei, Jim Whiting, Tilo Tom Fabritius ) established. A bicycle manufactory, fashion designers, architects and printer who settled in the cotton mill, as well as a goldsmith, a ceramics workshop, a cinema, a porcelain factory, an artist needs trade and dining facilities.

Due to an agreement to finance the restoration began in 2008, the " Hall 14 " continues. The total cost amounts to approximately 1.2 million euros, of which more than half ( 690,000 euros ) to be funded by the Urban Restructuring Project. The owner makes a share of 241,500 euros, 103,500 euros and Leipzig brings on from municipal own funds.
