The beard runner or even Bart beetle ( Leistus - probably from gr ληίστης " robber " ) is a genus of beetles in the family of ground beetles ( Carabidae ) within the subfamily Nebriinae. It occurs in Europe with 59 species and subspecies, 9 are also native to Central Europe. The genus is Holarctic spread.

Features

The beetles are characterized by laterally flat and enlarged mandibles wide, outside long prickly maxillae. Your pronotum is heart-shaped.

The larvae are usually colored pale and have dark signs, which may have a metallic sheen. They have a large and rounded, stalked head with long, forwardly projecting mandibles. Her long legs are ciliated long, the Cerci are provided with bristles. They are similar in appearance to the larvae of water beetles ( Dysticidae ).

Occurrence and life

The animals feed mainly springtails ( Collembola ), which are likely to be caught with long bristles under the head.
