Leksand IF ( Leksand 's Idrottsförening Ishockey, also Leksand Stars ) is a Swedish professional ice hockey club from the town of Leksand, who previously could earn four times the national title.

History

The club was founded in 1919 with the sections bandy and football and from 1938 was also a hockey department about the club. The team was relegated before the season 1948/49, for the first time in the highest Swedish leagues, scoring from 1950 to 2001 among the top teams in the championship round. The most successful period in their history was the beginning of the 1970s, when you could earn four league titles (1969, 1973, 1974, 1975).

Only in 2001 the club was relegated from Elitserien from the Allsvenskan. Since then, the team commutes frequently between the Elitserien and the HockeyAllsvenskan. In August 2007, the club reached worldwide attention when you committed the former NHL goaltender Ed Belfour. However, it also failed with this obligation at the resurgence in the Elitserien.

Home ground

The professional team of the club to pay its home games in the 2005 re-opened Ejendals arena offering 7650 spectators. The official record crowd of 8017 spectators was achieved in a game against the rival Mora IK on 6 January 2006, but since then the maximum capacity has been reduced due to security restrictions. Built in 1965 Isstadion Leksand summed up 6300 spectators and was renovated in 2005, the capacity was increased and additional 272 VIP seats were created.

The attendance record since existence of the club was set up in 1964, when 12479 the final match against Brynäs IF pursued in the open-air stadium Leksand Isstadion. In addition to the ice arena the club is still a Trainingseishalle, the LRF halls available that provides 360 spectators.

Locked jersey numbers

  • # 2 Åke Lassas Åke Lassas was the first player from Leksand, who played in the national team. At the Olympic Winter Games in Oslo in 1952 he won the bronze medal. In total, he completed 23 seasons for Leksand IF.
  • # 18 Jonas Bergqvist Bergqvist completed 575 games for Leksand IF, in which he scored 224 goals. 1987, 1991 and 1998, he was world champion.
