Lemovices

The Lemoviken were an ancient tribe of Celts in Aquitaine. They were located between the Bituriges and the Arverni and of Caesar in his De Bello Gallico ( " About the Gallic War " ) mentioned twice: As allies of Vercingetorix, among other Aquitanian strains ( 7, 4 ) and in the last year of the war 51 v. BC, when Caesar had overwinter some of his legions in the border area of Lemoviken (8, 46).

The imperial scholar Pliny the Elder and Ptolemy mention the tribe of Lemoviken (4, 109 or 2, 7). Their capital was called until the 7th century AD Augustoritum, but was since the conquest of Gaul under the name Civitas Lemovicum ( "City of Lemoviken " ) known. Hence the present name of the city, Limoges developed.

The name of the Lemoviken explained by the combination of the names of persons Lemo with the suffix - Services ( " fighters" ).
