Leo Field ( born February 14, 1869 in Augsburg, † September 5, 1924 in Florence; actually Leo Hirschfeld ) was an Austrian librettist, translator and writer.

His parents came to Vienna in 1875, which was his real home. Leo Field, brother of the more famous librettist Victor Leon and the educator Eugenie Hirschfeld studied philosophy in Vienna and in 1892 received his doctorate. Even as a student he wrote feature articles for Vienna magazines. His literary talent was encouraged by Jakob Julius David and Hermann Bahr. His first dramatic stage work received the Farmer Field Award. During a temporary stay in Berlin in 1900, he worked for the Überbrettl. He then worked as a dramaturg and director in Brunswick. Field belonged to the inner circle of friends of Josef Kainz.

He was considered one of idiomatischsten translator from English; widely disseminated, for example, his translations of the works of Charles Dickens. With the rediscovery of operas by Alexander Zemlinsky and Hans Gál for the opera stage and the literary field are not always high-level libretti again brought close to a wider audience.
