Leo Nowak

Leopold Nowak ( born March 17, 1929 in Magdeburg ) was from 1994 to 2004 the first Catholic bishop of the Diocese of Magdeburg rebuilt.

Life

After training and studying for two years at the School of Industry and Trade is decided Nowak 1950 for a clerical career. He took on a theology and philosophy at the University of Paderborn and at the seminary of Erfurt. On 10 May 1956 he was ordained a priest in the Episcopal Commissary from Magdeburg in Magdeburg Episcopal Office, Friedrich Maria Rintelen. Prior to his appointment by the Bishop John Brown as head of the pastoral office in 1976 Nowak acted as curate and pastor in Magdeburg.

On 12 February 1990, Pope John Paul II Leo Nowak Titular Bishop of Cissa and Apostolic Administrator in Magdeburg. He received his episcopal consecration on 24 March 1990 in Magdeburg his predecessor John Brown. Co-consecrators were the Archbishop of Paderborn and later Cardinal Johannes Joachim Degenhardt and the Apostolic Administrator of Schwerin, Theodor stroke. Nowak's motto is omnia in Christo Instaurare.

As of 1821 the current diocese formed the eastern part of the Archdiocese of Paderborn. Given that an administration of lying in the GDR region, however, has not been possible from Paderborn, there a Bishop's office was built in 1973. Although this was officially the Archdiocese of Paderborn and the Apostolic Administrator was accordingly only as auxiliary bishop where he worked, but developed it in fact, an independent diocese. The ( Christmas ) Bishop / Administrator was a member of the Berlin Conference of Bishops.

The present Diocese of Magdeburg was separated by the Apostolic Constitution Cum gaudio on 27 June 1994 by the Archdiocese of Paderborn and collected on 8 July 1994 into an independent diocese with Leopold Nowak as its first bishop. Whose term of office ended on 17 March 2004, after Pope John Paul II had accepted the resignation, to which every bishop of the Roman Catholic Church is obliged by Church law when it reaches his age of 75.

Bishop Gerhard Feige, who conducted the affairs of the diocese as diocesan administrator during the period of vacancy, was appointed on 23 February 2005 by the Pope as the successor and inaugurated on 16 April 2005.

On 10 May 2006 Leo Nowak in the Cathedral of St. Sebastian at Magdeburg celebrated its golden anniversary as a priest. With his celebrated four more gold jubilee of the diocese of the church service.
