Leo Reisman

Leo Reisman ( born October 11, 1897 in Boston, † December 18, 1961 in Miami) was an American violinist and big band leader in the swing and popular music.

Life and work

After he had previously worked with college orchestras, Leo Reisman founded in the early 1920s a dance orchestra, the Society Dance Orchestra. Apart from a few tours along the east coast of the United States, he has performed in Boston at the Hotel Brunswick. As was customary, Reisman had several ensembles run under his name. In 1929 he had an engagement at New York's Central Park Casino; later he also appeared at the Waldorf -Astoria and toured to Europe. During this time he had with the Fats Waller Title Is not Misbehavin ' ( with the singer Lew Conrad, # 2) a hit, as with Bye Bye Blackbird. "Happy Days Are Here Again" was in November 1929 with the vocals by Lou Levin another success, followed by " Out of Nowhere " (1931, # 6). Number 1 hits he scored then with Cole Porter " Night and Day" (1932, with Fred Astaire as a singer ) and Con Conrad's " The Continental " (1934 )

Reisman recorded for the Columbia label, Brunswick, Victor, Brunswick and Decca. during his time at Victor Reisman recorded many lesser-known Broadway songs. He also provided the composers and Broadway artist as his band vocalist before, so among other things, Harold Arlen, Fred Astaire, Smith Ballew, Clifton Webb, and Arthur Schwartz. 1931/32 Lee Wiley was given the opportunity for first recordings; also Dinah Shore was one of his singers. At Reisman's recordings also worked with the trumpeter Bubber Miley Ellington.

After he had retired from the music business, he lived in Miami, where he died in December 1961.

The author Leo Watson argues that Reisman referred to the late 1920s, even as a jazz bandleader. He was also responsible for a series of articles on jazz in a magazine, but would never actually been a friend of the Jazz, even if his music at times had hot character.

Miscellaneous

In his band also played the pianist Eddy Duchin (1909-1951), whose short life in the biopic loved for all eternity (The Eddy Duchin Story; Duchy is played by Tyrone Power ) is presented. His involvement in the Reisman band represents an episode of the film

" Weekend and sunshine " by the Comedian Harmonists, taken on August 22, 1930, is actually a version of "Happy Days Are Here Again", which was recorded by Leo Reisman's orchestra on November 20, 1929.
