Leogang Mountains

The Leogang Mountains are a mountain range of the Northern Limestone Alps in the Eastern Alps in Salzburg. They are located between the Lofer valley, Saalfelden and Leogang and together with the northwest superior Lofer Steinberg mountains, two mountain ranges, which by the Romans saddle ( 1,202 m) are separated, but defined in the Alpine Club classification of the Eastern Alps as a single subgroup ( Lofer and Leogang stone mountains). The Leogang Mountains are located south of the Kitzbühel Alps and separated from the eastern section of stony sea by incised valleys. Typical of the stone plateau mountains are sticks with steep edge crashes and strongly undulating high Karen.

As a typical karst mountains the Leogang Mountains are traversed by numerous caves. The most famous of which is over 50 km long, right on the main road between Lofer and Saalfelden lying Lamprechtsofen. A remarkable rock formation is the milker hole in the southeast wall of the Birnhorns.

The Birnhorn forms, with 2,634 m the highest peak. The military training area Hochfilzen the Austrian Armed Forces is located in the west of Leogang Mountains.

Huts of the Alpine Association

In the Leogang Stone Mountains there are only two huts of the Alpine Club.

  • Lamprechtsofen Cave restaurant: Height: 664 m above sea level. A., only open during the day in summer and winter, 6 Bunks, right on the main road Lofer - Saalfelden
  • Passau hut: Height: 2033 m above sea level. A., cultivated summer from mid-June to late September, 45 mattresses, winter room with 6 camps open valley town of Leogang, duration of Leogang: 2.75 hours
  • Lettlkaser: Height: 1441 m above sea level. A., farmed in the summer, not winter room, no sleep camp, valley town: Perner angle - Gerst floor (2h walk), Wiesersberg - Gerst floor ( 2.5 hours walking time ), Leogang ( 2 hours walk), Mitter fire ( 1.5 hours walking time )
