Léon Bonnat

Léon Joseph Florentin Bonnat Hon RA ( born June 20, 1833 in Bayonne, † September 8, 1922 in Monchy -Saint- Eloi, Oise ) was a French painter.

Life

Bonnat was first in Madrid, Federico de Madrazo y student of Kuntz and then entered with 21 years in the studio of Léon Cogniet in Paris. His history paintings are characterized by a refined, strong, formed at the Spanish flavor and harmony of color, his characters, devoid of all coquetry, are vigorously modeled, stand out clear and full of light out and show a great sharpness of the characteristic times of course is increased to the rawness. In 1874, he created a " Christ crucified ", the equally pushed his naturalistic (almost expressionistic ) representation from the public and art critics to rejection.

Since 1875 he has preferably a portrait dedicated and herein acquired a great reputation in Parisian society. One of the first of this kind was the portrait of the actress Alix Pasca. His masterpieces are the portraits of Adolphe Thiers, Victor Hugo and President Jules Grévy, which are distinguished by size and energy of the characteristic and by modeling of great sculptural power.

At the age of 89 years he died on September 8, 1922 in Monchy -Saint- Eloi, Dept. Oise.

To Bonnat's students included, among other things Gustave Caillebotte, Henri Adrien Tanoux, Jean Béraud, Walter Gay, Georges Paul Leroux, Edvard Munch, Stanhope Forbes, Louis Béroud, Henri de Toulouse- Lautrec, Richard Reiman and Vaclav Sochor.
