Leon Golub

Leon Golub ( born January 23, 1922 in Chicago, † August 8, 2004 in New York) was an American painter and printmaker of American realism.

His studies at the University of Chicago, he graduated in 1942 with a BA degree. This is followed by a studied art at the Art Institute of Chicago followed, which he completed after the acquisition of the title BFA (1949) and MFA (1950). He was married to the artist Nancy Spero, with whom he also worked. Both belonged to a " The Monster Roster " to these artists group.

Based on the experiences of the Second World War developed Golub, a painting in which the means of a modern realism social and political issues were articulated critical. Golub thematized the Vietnam War as well as torture and is one of the most distinguished representatives of dedicated contemporary art. Golub took three times in Documenta in Kassel in part ( documenta III in 1964, Documenta 8, 1987 and Documenta 11, 2002) and at the 50th Venice Biennale, 2003.
