Leon Pownall

Leon Pownall (* April 26, 1943 near Wrexham, Wales, United Kingdom, † June 2, 2006 in Stratford, Ontario) was a Canadian actor, writer and drama teacher.

Life

Pownall, born in Wales, moved in 1957 with his family in the Canadian city of Hamilton on. He managed in 1964 to join the National Theatre School of Canada, but received at the same time a commitment to the Stratford Festival of Canada. He played in eight seasons, among others, Henry V ( 1966) and Laertes (1969). After moving to the Canadian West Coast and a short dedication to the company in Vancouver, he was acting teacher at the Matsqui Penitentiary in Abbotsford. In parallel, he worked as artistic director at the White Rock Summer Theatre and the University of British Columbia.

In 1986 he returned to Stratford and gave Henry VIII, later Claudius in Hamlet and Long John Silver in Treasure Island ( Treasure Iceland ) (1991 ), and Mark Antony in Antony and Cleopatra (1993). He had a supporting role in 1989 as a Latin teacher McAllister in The Dead Poets Society. In 2000, he starred in the drama film The Day Reagan What shot in the movie Dirty Pictures, 2001. In 2002, he had great success with the one- man play Do Not Go Gentle on the life of Dylan Thomas.

In 1998 he was nominated for his performance in the film The Sleep Room for the Gemini Award.
