Leonard Rose

Leonard Rose ( born July 27, 1918 in Washington, DC; † November 16, 1984 in White Plains, New York) was an American cellist.

Roses Jewish parents came from Russia. He grew up in Miami, Florida, on. From 1934 to 1938 he attended the Curtis Institute of Music in Philadelphia. 1938 Rose got his first engagement at the NBC Orchestra under the baton of Arturo Toscanini. From 1939 to 1943 he played with the Cleveland Orchestra from 1943 to 1951 with the New York Philharmonic Orchestra.

Since the fifties rose operated primarily as a soloist and with smaller ensembles. Legendary is his collaboration with the violinist Isaac Stern and Eugene Istomin pianist. Their recording of the complete piano trios by Beethoven received the 1971 Grammy Award for best chamber music recording.

Rose was also successful as a teacher. Among his most famous pupils were Lynn Harrell and Yo- Yo Ma.
