Leonard Slatkin

Leonard Slatkin ( born September 1, 1944 in Los Angeles, California) is an American conductor.

Slatkin was born into a musical family - his father Felix Slatkin was a violinist, conductor and founder of the Hollywood String Quartet, and his mother Eleanor Aller was cellist of this quartet.

Slatkin studied at Indiana University and the Los Angeles City College and began his musical career as a pianist. Later he moved to the Juilliard School, where he taught Jean Paul Morel in conducting. His successful debut as a conductor he had in 1966 with the Youth Symphony Orchestra of New York. In 1968 he was awarded an assistantship at the Saint Louis Symphony Orchestra. He remained there until 1977, when he became conductor of the New Orleans Philharmonic Orchestra. In 1979, he returned as chief conductor to St. Louis. He remained in this position until 1996, and then took over the management of the National Symphony Orchestra in Washington, DC.

In 2000 he was appointed principal conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra. He had until 11 September 2004, the 110th Last Night of the Proms, held this position. He was appointed to the new position of Principal Guest Conductor of the Los Angeles Philharmonic at the Hollywood Bowl in 2005, and is also Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.

Slatkin was and operates worldwide as a guest conductor with numerous orchestras. In Germany he worked with, among others, with the Dresden Staatskapelle, Berlin Philharmonic, the Munich Philharmonic, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra and regularly with the Deutsche Symphonie- Orchester Berlin.

Since 1986, Leonard Slatkin is married to the soprano Linda High field, they have a son, Daniel.

Slatkin has conducted an extensive repertoire and with his interpretations of American music of the 20th century and works by British composers found more attention.

His own compositions, including The Raven (1971 ) for narrator and orchestra ( after the poem by Edgar Allan Poe ), have become little known.
