Leonardo Antonelli

Leonardo Antonelli ( born November 6, 1730 in Senigallia, Italy, † January 23, 1811 ) was a Cardinal of the Catholic Church.

Life

Antonelli was a member of the Roman Curia, and was prefect of the Congregation for the Propagation of the Faith and for the Congregation of the Index.

He was called by Pope Pius VI. appointed cardinal priest of Santa Sabina on April 24, 1775. After his appointment as Cardinal Bishop of Palestrina, he was ordained by Giovanni Francesco Albani on March 19, 1794 to the bishop. Co-consecrators were the Curia bishops Ottavio bonuses and Simone de Magistris CO.

Antonelli supported the Civil Constitution of the Clergy in France in 1790, so that the Catholic church services did not have to stop. Under Pius VII, he was from 1800 -1811 Secretary of the Holy Inquisition. He followed the Pope to Paris to take part in the coronation of Napoleon in 1804. 1809 Antonelli was reported by the French rulers of Rome, then sought refuge in Spoleto and ultimately in Senigallia.

He was the nephew of Cardinal Nicolò Maria Antonelli (1759 ).
