Leonardo Leo

Leonardo Leo ( August 5, 1694 * (after Piccinni 1701) in San Vito degli Schiavoni, today's San Vito dei Norman, † October 31, 1744 in Naples) was an Italian composer of the Baroque.

Life

Leonardo Leo learned at the Conservatory della pieta de ' Turchini in Naples and in Giuseppe Ottavio Pitoni in Rome and lived from 1717 until his death in 1744 (not 1742 or 1743, as Burney and Piccinni specify) church choir and director of the Conservatory Sant ' Onofrio in his native town.

As one of the most eminent masters of the Neapolitan school Leo was excellent in all genres of composition and equal in passionate and sublime as in naive, Delicate and joking sticking. He shared the excellent reputation with his contemporaries Francesco Durante. The supporters of the two divided his time into two rival camps on the " Leisti " and the " Durantisti ". Leo created more than 500 works, in addition to the numerous operas, many Church agencies such as trade shows, psalms and cantatas, serenades and instrumental works. The majority of his work is preserved in the library of the Conservatorio di San Pietro a Majella in Naples, in the Vatican Library and the British Library in London. Of particular importance are Leo's six cello concertos.

Even as a teacher Leo has worked with success, were among his students, among others Giovanni Battista Pergolesi, Niccolò Jommelli, Ignazio Fiorillo and Niccolò Piccinni.
