Leonid Zhabotinsky

Leonid Ivanovich Schabotinski (Russian Леонид Иванович Жаботинский, scientific transliteration Leonid Ivanovich Žabotinskij; born January 28, 1938 in Uspenka, Sumy Oblast ) is a former Soviet weightlifter.

Career

Leonid grew up in Zaporozhye and played on the high school volleyball and basketball and also for operation Athletics. As he grew larger and heavier with age, he decided at age 19 for the weight lifting. He learned the trade of a locksmith in the Kharkov tractor plant, but was drafted into the Red Army, where he remained and later became an officer. In the army he had good training conditions and coach. In 1957 he reached the Olympic Dreikampt 435 kg, increased in 1958 to 460 kg, and reached 1961 for the first time the 500 kg limit. He increased his performance constantly and was first used in 1963 at the World Championships in Stockholm in the heavyweight division. There the famous Yuri Vlasov and Norbert Schemansky were still stronger than him, but he won the bronze medal.

As early as 1964 it was so far, he struck at the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964, Vlasov and Schemansky and was charged with 572.5 kg Olympic champion.
