Leopold Freund

Leopold Freund ( born April 5, 1868 in Miscovice in Prague, † January 7, 1943 in Brussels) was an Austrian radiologist.

Life and work

Leopold Freund was a professor of radiology at the Medical University of Vienna and is considered the founder of medical radiology and radiotherapy.

With the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad Röntgen in 1895 and the following year the discovery of radioactivity by Antoine Henri Becquerel and the first application to the patient by Leopold Freund in Vienna the basis for radiotherapy was created.

Leopold Freund also published seminal works well on light treatment of occupational diseases and the use of x-rays for the testing of building materials.

Friend who was a Jew, emigrated in 1938 after the annexation of Austria to Belgium.

Writings

  • With A treated with X-rays case of nevus Pigmentosus piliferus, an article in the Wiener Medizinische Wochenschrift from March 6, 1897 justified friend radiotherapy as a new scientific field.
