Leopold (given name)

Leopold is both a male first name and a family name.

Origin and Meaning

Leopold is a form of the Old High German name Liutbald, the syllables of the name Liut ( Old High German for people ) and soon ( Old High German for " bold, brave " ) composed and means something like " the Bold from the people." The syllable soon finds herself as the second syllable almost exclusively in male names.

Dissemination took the name Leopold also by the Holy Leopold, Margrave of Austria. He lived from 1075 to 1136, but was canonized until 1663. According to him the Leopold mountain is named in Vienna. Most of the name is therefore widespread in the southern German-speaking countries.
