Leopoldo Benites

Leopoldo Benites Vinueza ( born October 17, 1905 in Guayaquil, † March 12, 1995 ) was an Ecuadorian diplomat and 1973-1974 President of the UN General Assembly.

Studies and professional activities

The study of political science and social sciences at the University of Guayaquil, he graduated with a diploma. Leopoldo Benites taught as a university professor. He also published several volumes of poetry and essays.

From 1944 to 1945 he was a member of the Constituent Assembly of Ecuador and worked during this time with the Constitution.

Diplomat

In 1947 he was first ambassador to Uruguay and held that post until 1952. He was then ambassador to Bolivia and then to November 1956, Ambassador to Argentina from October 1954 to January 1956. This office he held until his appointment as Permanent Representative to the United Nations in August 1960. During these years he was also repeatedly delegate of his country at conferences of Latin American countries.

Ascent to the President of the UN General Assembly

Already from January 1953 to June 1954 he was Deputy Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations.

Benites was in October 1960 Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations. He also represented his country as a member of the UN Security Council from October 1960 to December 1961. Additionally, he served in the period 1961-1970 some more offices in committees and councils of the United Nations, most recently in 1970 as Vice President of the 25th session of the UN General Assembly.

On September 18, 1973, he was elected to succeed Stanisław Trepczynski as President of the UN General Assembly and served as the 28th such meeting and the sixth special session, before he was replaced on 17 September 1974 by Abd al- Aziz Bouteflika. On the first day of his presidency, said Dr. Benites 1973 the German Democratic Republic and the Federal Republic of Germany to the United Nations members
