Leopoldo Nobili

Leopoldo Nobili (* 1784 in Trassilico; † August 5, 1835 in Florence ) was an Italian physicist who developed a variety of electrical instruments.

He attended the Military Academy in Modena and was an artillery officer in Modena, Brescia and Reggio. To participate in Napoleon's Russian campaign he was awarded the Legion of Honour.

He then decided to study physics, especially the electrical phenomena. In 1825 he invented the astatic galvanometer, in which he compensated the earth's magnetic field, and which he presented to the Italian Society of Science in Modena in May.

Oersted and Fourier had already been invented in 1823 a thermopile of antimony and bismuth. 1826 developed Nobili Macedonio Melloni, together with a new thermopile to measure thermal radiation and named it thermomultiplier or electric thermo scope.

In 1826 he presented his Nobilischen rings before: There are metal deposits as a result of an electrolytic reaction. These two connected with a battery electrodes are immersed in a metal salt solution that is covered by a silvered copper plate. 55 years later, this idea of Adrien Guébhard ( 1849-1924 ) was taken up.

In 1832 he became professor of physics at the Grand Ducal Museum in Florence, where he undertook a variety of experiments on electromagnetic induction with director Vincenzo Antinori.

In February 1835, he became a corresponding member of the Berlin Academy of Sciences.
